Standing in the Gap — no.1e

— praying for children accused of witchcraft.

'So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am."' — Exodus 3:4.

Context

Moses saw the burning bush and turned aside from his focus on his day to day work, to this unexplained phenomenon he could see taking place. God never drives us on, but when he sees that we have turned aside to look at what he is doing, then like with Moses, he calls to us personally to engage in his work.

Many of us are already engaging with God in the business of addressing accusations of witchcraft against children, but God is calling each of us individually, by name, to join this work. Let us spend some time to reflect on the personal nature of our response to this phenomenon that brings so much harm to children. Have we completely answered God, as Moses did, with the unlimited response of, "Here I am"?

Thank God

  • Lord we give thanks for how you are continuing to gather your people into a body of prayerful warriors to stand in the gap for children accused of witchcraft. Open our eyes Lord to the particular calling you are giving to each of us as we participate in your Kingdom’s work.
  • Give thanks to God for the recent ‘Heart of the Matter’ training that has impacted and equipped pastors in Goma, DRC in September. Reading the feedback from the participants it is clear that so many understand that a personal response is called for, with so many statements starting with ‘I…’ or ‘I must…’, such as this response from a pastor: “I must preach a message of love and protection for children like this (following the teaching given) and in the will of God.”

“I must preach a message of love and protection for children like this and in the will of God.” — Pastor in Goma, D.R.Congo

Please Pray

  • For a personal response from all those who have turned aside and really looked at what is happening to children accused of witchcraft. Please pray for all those who have and will be impacted by the testimonies, actions and concerns raised at the UN Conference in September. Lord, let us not be overwhelmed, but recognise your leading and authority to act.
  • The medium of film and television have power to influence. Many portrayals of witchcraft from the film industry are contributing to a culture of fear and often depict a violent response to those accused. Pray that an influential champion will be raised up within the film industry to reverse this trend and use film to further work to address accusations of witchcraft against children, to the glory of God.
